Badilisha Eco-Village Foundation Trust:
Promoting Permaculture Design and Ethics on Lake Victoria
verified
Badilisha ,www.badilisha.org and www.rusingagreenspace.org is on a mission to regreen their Rusinga island in Lake Victoria, Kenya. For more than 10 years their team has been implementing agroforestry and natural regeneration of indigenous forests to rehabilitate the landscapes. The goal is 100,000 trees planted annually and there is always growing demand that outweighs the supply from their three tree nurseries in the island. The agroforestry woodlots are home based food forests within the community to ease the fuel wood pressure on the wider forests they are restoring. Woodlots provide the community with fodder, firewood, charcoal, herbs and other benefits without destroying the islands forests. Badilisha uses permaculture to create diverse forests with different layers, comprising trees serving many functions like nitrogen fixers, insect attractants , herbs, fruits, forage for bees etc. Badilisha has many community members who have been part of the initiatives of creating forests.

About the project
One of the best ways to get more trees is to ask everyone to plant some.
This agroforestry on previously degraded land commenced around 2010. A fence was installed around the perimeter to handle freerange grazing practices for livestock especially goats. Pioneer tree species were planted first, integrated with soil building species, and fruit trees were added. The growth of trees has been significant. The land is owned by a community member who collaborates with Badalisha. The Treecoin revenue is to fund continuity of the wider Badilisha reforestation project.
